Best Machinery Transport in Adelaide
Match the Truck Class, Not the Ad
The best machinery transport provider in Adelaide is the one whose truck class matches your machine's weight and site access. Under 14 tonnes, an owner-operated tilt tray like ours is fastest and cheapest. Between 14 and 25 tonnes you need a float. Above 25 tonnes you need a low loader and permits.
Written by Equip Hire & Contracting, an owner-operated tilt tray based in Modbury Heights. We move machinery under 14 tonnes and we name the operators to call when yours is bigger.
The 10 Second Answer
MACHINE UNDER 14 TONNES, ADELAIDE OR NORTHERN SUBURBS
Call us. That is our truck exactly.
Excavators, bobcats, skid steers, scissor lifts, rollers. Same-day often available for Northern Adelaide before 10am. From $175.
0466 286 704MACHINE OVER 14 TONNES, OR OVER-DIMENSION
You need a float operator, not us.
A tilt tray physically cannot take it. Ring us anyway if you are unsure and we will point you at an operator who can, at no cost.
See who to callOur bias, stated up front: we are an operator, not a directory. We only earn from the first box. Everything below is the framework we use to quote and to refuse jobs, so you can check our reasoning rather than trust our ranking.
The Load Class Match: Weigh Before You Ring
Every failed machinery transport booking in Adelaide traces back to the same mistake. The customer picked a provider before they knew the machine's operating weight.
Operating weight is not the same as the number in the model name. A "5 tonne" excavator with a hydraulic hammer, a rock bucket and a full fuel tank can sit closer to 6.5 tonnes on the tray. Check the compliance plate on the machine, not the brochure.
Once you know the real weight, the correct truck class is not a matter of opinion.
| Machine operating weight | Correct truck class | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Under 4.5 t | Plant trailer or light tilt tray | Cheapest option. Many hire firms deliver on their own trailer. |
| 1.5 t to 14 t ← Equip Hire | Heavy tilt tray (8x4) | The Adelaide sweet spot. One truck, one driver, no pilot vehicles, kerbside drop. |
| 14 t to 25 t | Tandem or tri-axle float | Prime mover plus trailer. Needs a wide, straight approach and a ramp-friendly site. |
| 25 t to 50 t | Low loader or widener float | Route planning becomes a real cost line. Often quoted per job, not per hour. |
| 50 t and over | Multi-axle heavy haulage | Specialist operators. Lead times measured in days, not hours. |
| Over 2.5 m wide | Any class, plus permits | Over-dimension work triggers NHVR conditions and often pilot vehicles. Raise it early. |
Landed on the 1.5 t to 14 t row? That is the truck sitting in our yard at Modbury Heights. Two minutes on the phone gets you a firm price.
CALL JACKDirectory listings rank providers by advertising spend. They do not tell you that a 6 tonne excavator on a float is an expensive mistake, or that an 18 tonne machine on a tilt tray is simply not going to happen.
The Four Provider Types in Adelaide, and Which One You Need
Adelaide's machinery transport market splits into four distinct types. They are not really competitors with each other. They serve different weight bands and different urgency levels.
Owner-Operated Tilt Tray
1.5 t to 14 t
One truck, one person, direct phone line. You speak to the driver who will do the job. This is what we are: Equip Hire runs an 8x4 tilt tray out of Modbury Heights.
Best for
Mini and mid-size excavators, bobcats, skid steers, scissor lifts, rollers, site containers, single-machine shifts.
Strength
Speed and price. Same-day is genuinely possible because there is no dispatch layer.
Limit
Hard ceiling at payload. When the machine is too big, a good owner-operator refers you on instead of taking the booking.
Fleet Tilt Tray Companies
Similar weight band, more trucks
Multiple trucks, a dispatcher, broader coverage across metro Adelaide. Established names include Adelaide Tilt Services and Tilt Deck Trucks.
Best for
Multi-machine moves, businesses needing an account and consistent availability.
Strength
Redundancy. If one truck breaks down, another goes.
Limit
You rarely speak to the driver, and the closest truck to your site may not be theirs.
Heavy Haulage & Float Operators
14 t and up
Prime movers and floats built for machines a tilt tray cannot legally carry. Roc's Towing publicly advertises widener floats towing up to 36 tonnes, Multiquip advertises float capacity to 80 tonne mobile plant, and State Plant Hire advertises float hire to 50 tonnes supplied with an operator.
Best for
20 tonne excavators, dozers, graders, quarry and civil plant.
Strength
The only legitimate option in this band.
Limit
Higher minimum charges and longer lead times. Confirm current capacity directly, because fleets change.
Marketplaces & Directories
Any band, indirectly
iseekplant and similar platforms collect your details and distribute them to suppliers who pay for leads.
Best for
Regional or unusual jobs where you do not know who operates in the area.
Strength
Reach. They will find someone, somewhere.
Limit
You become a shared lead. Expect multiple calls, and note that the platform does not carry your machine or your risk.
The honest version: if your machine is under 14 tonnes and you are in Northern Adelaide, a local owner-operator will almost always beat a fleet or a marketplace on both price and timing. Above 14 tonnes, stop reading provider reviews and call a float operator.
WE ARE THAT OPERATOR: 0466 286 704Why Two Quotes for the Same Job Differ by $200
Machinery transport quotes are not priced on distance. They are priced on truck hours, and truck hours start when the truck leaves its yard.
Industry rate guides put a large bogie-axle tilt tray around $105 per hour and an 8-wheeler around $115 per hour including GST as a national reference point. Almost no Adelaide job actually costs that, because of four hidden lines.
Positioning time is the biggest single variable in an Adelaide transport quote. A truck based in Modbury travelling to Salisbury bills far less dead-running than the same truck coming from the southern suburbs.
Positioning time
Distance from the operator's yard to your pickup, before any of your load is touched. This is why the closest truck usually wins.
Minimum charge
Most operators have a floor, often one to two hours. A ten minute shift across a subdivision still bills the minimum.
Access and load time
Soft ground, steep driveways, low gates and tight turning circles all add truck hours. Non-running machines add winch time.
Return leg
A one-way delivery where the truck returns empty is priced differently to a job that pairs with another load on the same run.
How to get comparable quotes
Give every provider the same five facts: machine make and model, operating weight, running or non-running, pickup address, delivery address. Anything vaguer and you are comparing guesses.
Our machinery transport starts at $175, with the exact figure quoted upfront once those five facts are known. Combo pricing applies when the machine is one you have also hired from us.
Five Questions That Separate Good Providers From Cheap Ones
We run excavator and tipper hire as our primary business, which means we are loading and unloading our own machines across Northern Adelaide most days of the week. These are the questions we would ask if we were hiring someone else to move our gear.
"What is your payload, not your GVM?"
GVM is the truck plus everything on it. Payload is what it can actually carry. A 30 tonne GVM truck does not carry 30 tonnes of machine. Ours carries up to 14 tonnes.
"Do you have a winch?"
If the machine does not start, does not track, or has a hydraulic fault, a tilt tray without an integrated winch cannot load it. This single question eliminates half the wasted call-outs we hear about.
"Will you tell me if this job is too big for you?"
The answer separates operators who care about the outcome from operators who care about the booking. Anyone who says yes to every machine on the phone has not asked enough questions.
"What happens if my site access is worse than I described?"
Soft ground after rain, a gate narrower than expected, a neighbour's car in the turning space. A provider who has a plan for this has done the job before.
"Is goods-in-transit cover in place for this load?"
Public liability is not the same cover as goods in transit. For high-value or specialist plant, raise it at booking, not on the day.
Score your shortlist on those five answers rather than on star ratings, and the best provider for your specific job identifies itself in about ten minutes of phone calls.
Where Equip Hire Fits, and Where We Do Not
We are a Northern Adelaide owner-operated tilt tray in the 1.5 to 14 tonne band. That is the honest boundary of what we do well.
Call us when
- Your machine is between roughly 1.5 and 14 tonnes operating weight
- The job is in Modbury, Salisbury, Elizabeth, Munno Para, Gawler, Tea Tree Gully, Golden Grove, Adelaide metro, the Hills or the Barossa
- You need it moved today or tomorrow rather than next week
- The machine does not run and needs winching
- You are collecting from Pickles, Grays or another Adelaide auction yard
- You are hiring the machine from us and want it delivered as one booking
Do not call us when
- The machine is over 14 tonnes. You need a float operator, and we will name one.
- The load is over-dimension and needs pilot vehicles.
- You need interstate line haul. We may be able to arrange it, but a national specialist will usually price it better.
The truck
Isuzu FYJ 300-350 8x4 tilt tray, one of the larger tilt trays operating out of Northern Adelaide.
- GVM: 30 tonnes
- Payload: up to 14 tonnes
- Engine: 9.8L turbo diesel, 350hp, Allison auto
- Suspension: Hendrickson airbag rear
- Winch: integrated, for non-runners
The person
You speak to Jack. Same person who runs the equipment hire side, quotes the job and drives the truck. No call centre, no lead broker, no dispatch queue.
Have the machine's make, model and operating weight ready, plus both addresses. You will get a yes with a price, or a no with a referral. Both take about two minutes.
